AUSTRALIAN LOANS
ABSENCE OF ADEQUATE SINKING FUNDS COMMENTS OF “FINANCIAL TIMES” (Rec. October 11, 9.10 p.m.) London, October 11. The “Financial Times,” in an editorial upon Australian finance, emphasises the general absence of adequate sinking funds, adding: “The Commonwealth and Western Australia arc conspicuous exceptions. It is evident the investor is becoming more insistent that such a safeguard against 'over-borrowing shall be provided. Whether the Australian Slates regard the requirements as reas inablc does not affect the definiteness of the opinion that a proper arrangement fo; redemption should be shown in prospectuses. It is no answer to say that the information is available to searchers. Investors do not keep files. Everybody in Britain is anxious to facilitate Empire borrowing, provided the money is well spent. Dr. Earle Page says he is surprised at such a question being discussed, but-even in Australia everybody is not satisfied.”
