OUTPOSTS OF EMPIRE
SERVICE TO SOUTH SEA ISLANDS NEW VESSEL ORDERED As announced in the Dominion a short time ago the Government have been considering the question of owning its own vessel to carry on the mail, passenger, and fruit trade between the Dominion and the various South Pacific groups that now come under the jurisdiction of New Zealand. Following on the decision of the Government, a contract has now been let to the Dublin Dockyard Company, which is controlled by Vickers Limited, for a motor-driven vessel for the service. The new boat will have a dead-weight capacity of 950 tons, and be capable of a speed of Ilf knots. She will be oil-driven, the necessary power being supplied by’ two 000 horse-power scmi-Diesel engines. Insulated space for the carriage of fruit will be provided and suitable passenger accommodation for a limited number of people has not been overlooked. The contract price is about £a5,O()U, and it is understood that the vessel is to be delivered in a year’s time.
