COAL STRIKE
OWNERS’ LATEST PROPOSAL REJECTED BY FOREST OF DEAN MINERS London, July 12. Resolutions rejecting the latest coal owners’ proposal, aud asking the permission of the National Federation to withdraw all "safety men” . from the pits, were passed at a meeting, of the Forest of Dean miners, who decided to surround all pits with a view to persuading the "safety men” to return to their homes. . The pits in the Leigh district of Lancashire were reopened this morning, but the 14,000 miners in the district did not respond. Various branch meetings of miners passed resolutions that they would act onlv on the Miners’ Federation’s instructions.—Reuter. COOK’S MONOTONOUS CRY . London, July 12. The miners’ strike is more or less hidden beneath the ashes of England s Test collapse. The only reference today to the strike is the monotonous repetition of 'Mr. A. J. Cook, miners’ secretary: “Not a penny off pay; not a minute on day.” In order, however, to be more seasonable, he added: “Mr. Baldwin put the miners in fo bat, they nre still batting, and they have a strong tail.”—Aus.-N.Z.
