SEAMEN’S WAGES
SITTING OF SPECIAL COMMITTEE. The special committee set up under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act to consider the question of wages of seamen (other matters having been settled by an agreement between the union and the shipowners) commenced its sittings on Friday morning. Yesterday the taking of evidence was completed, and the committee commenced its deliberations. The chairman of the committee is Mr- E. Page, S.M., the representatives of the shipowners are Mr. W. G. Smith (Wellington), Captain R. H. Hammond (Auckland), and Mr. T. O. Bishop (secretary of the Employers’ Federation), and the union representatives are Messrs. J. McCombs, M.P., Walter Nash (secretary of the Labour Party), and Mr. F. C. Howell (assistant secretary of the Seamen's Union). Before the day’s session was finished the committee had agreed on certain matters. On the matter on which it wag not found possible to agree it was decided to accept the decision of the chairman, who will give hi? decision in a day or two.
