' TOWN AND COUNTRY Mrs. F. W. Goddard, of Harwich (England) is at present a visitor to Hawke’s Bay . Advice has been . received in Feeding of the death of a former resident of that town, in the person of Mrs. H. O. Guthrie, at Oamaru. The engagement is announced -of Bernice Eileen, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. I. Fisk, of Napier, to John, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Athya, of Kelburn, Wellington. Twenty-five new members were initiated at a meeting of the Palmerston North Citizen Girls’ Club on Saturday night. The girls have decided to hold a jumble sale in aid of the unemployment fund. The death took place last week of Miss A. Browne, of Thompson Street, Napier. Deceased, who was 79 years of age, was well known throughout the district, Sir. and Mrs. 11. N. B. Marshall (Palmerston North) arc visiting Wellington. A verv pleasant and successful silver wedding was celebrated recently by Sir. and Mrs. E. H. Spackman, Lansdowne, Masterton, when approximately 60 fritends -and relatives attended, many from distant localities. Sirs. Spackman received the guests in a silver-grey frock and the Misses I. and T. Spackman wore pink marocaine an.d cream knitted silk respectively. Among those present Were Sir. and Sirs. J. Cosford (Ohakune) and Sir. and Sirs. E. Cosford (Paliiatua); A large number of congratulatory letters and telegrams, were received, in addition to numerous silver presents. The Rev. J. SlcCaw, of Petone, who officiated at the wedding on July 10, 1901, at Mangatainoka, was present.' This was the first occasion on whin'i. Sir. fclcCaw attended a silver ■wedding. - Sirs. Sarah Jane Madden, relict of the late John Sladden, passed away at Palmerston at the »age of 74 years. She was born in Ireland and came to New Zealand over fifty years ago, settling in Napier. Following the death of her husband, she removed to Bunnythorpe, herself driving her stock from Napier to her new- place of residence. She was subsequently engaged in business in Palmerston for some time, her last rears being spent in retirement. Of late she had suffered ill-health and she nassed awav at the residence of her son-in-law. She leaves one daughter (Mrs. T. S. Madge) and one son (Mr. J. Madden), also of Palmerston. Masterton ladies should on no account fail to visit the wonderful display of Russian and Canadian Furs at present being held in the parish hall by Madame Menere and Co., Ltd., the noted Christchurch Furriers, where hundreds of magnificent furs are being sold at under New Zealand wholesale prices.
