MURDERED MISSIONARY

BRITISH GUNBOATS INVESTIGATE Shanghai, July 9. After the murder nf the American missionary, Phillips, the British gunboats Tarantulla, Moor Hen, and Robin were dispatched to investigate under Commander Fitzmaurice. On. their arrival at Wucliow the authorities, on various pretexts, refused to assist Dy furnishing pilots. Commander Fitzmaurice, after waiting nearly a fortnight, blockaded Wucliow on June 24. Early on June 25 the Wucliow authorities furnished pilots, and the blockade was lifted, and the gunboats proceeded upstream. The Canton Government has protested to the British Consul-General against its treatment, demanding an apology/ an indemnity, and the dismissal of Commander Fitzmaurice.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
