POOR HOUSEHOLD COAL

COMPLAINTS GENERAL General complaint is being made by the public as to the quality of die coal that is now being supplied to dealers in Wellington. The dealers, who have to bare the brunt of the complaints, are not to blame in the matter, and make no secret of the fact khat it is difficult to get shipments of good hand coal free from slack. In one case a dealer pointed to a small heap of New Zealand coal in his yard that seemed to be 50 or 60 per cent, slack. Another lot of Newcastle coal (which is not favoured for open fireplaces) was more _ sizeable. The reason for the poor quality of coal is said to have been caused in a measure by the coal strike at Newcastle, which induced the New Zealand Government to seek vast quantities of ‘large’ coal on the West Coast for the use of the railways.
