HUTCHESON ROAD TIP

“COMPLAINTS EXAGGERATED

The Health Committee reported to the City Council on Wednesday night concerning the practice of burning rubbish, etc., at the Hutcheson Road tip, that the assistantiCity engineer had reported and made the following statement:—“l think that the complaints are exaggerated. There is no doubt that the burning of this rubbish is a great boon to a large part of the population, and that the complaints come from a few people using Hutcheson Road. There will always be smoke as long as the tip is used for the burning of this class of rubbish, and it appears to me that it is a case of either ignoring the complaints or cease burning altogether.” Councillor McKeen took exception to the statement that the complaints were exaggerated. The officer had not investigated the number of people who were affected. He believed that eastern Vogeltown had grown more rapidly during the last year than any other part of the city. He moved that the clause be sent back to the committee. The chairman said there was nothing to send hack. The quotation was only one from a report from an officer. As a matter of fact they were finding great difficult-.' in dealing with the refuse of the city. They were told that they could riot burn at the tip, and when it was proposed that people should burn their own rubbish they were told they could not do that. The report was adopted.
