A ladv and gentleman, visitors to Rotorua, while on the lake in a boat, were witnesses to a spectacular exploit, illustrating what a hawk can and will do when necessity drives (says the Rotorua “Chronicle”). They saw a hawk, when passing a flock of gulls, suddenly dive, seize one of their number, and carry it away to some setub in the vicinity, being followed by all the gull’s friends and relatives, protesting fruitlessly against such proceedings at the top of their voices. Ihe gentleman followed fast in the boat, landed, and went to the spot, but the robber would not give up Ins prey until driven awav with an oar. The victim, in a parlous state, was rescued, the marauder living round in a threatening manner.' However, assistance had come too late, for the gull, had ad too severe a handling, and died in the boat. The incident exemplifies the great strength, nm—-“mintcly, of the hawk, for a go-”’ ' ’ll is nearly :is big and heavy a» itself.
