SERIOUS FIRE
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE [BY TELEGRAPH.]—PBESS ASSOCIATION. Tauniaruqui, June 7. A disastrous fire broke out in Riddell’s billiard-room at Matiere, at 2 o’clock on Sunday morning, spreading to Mr. Gordon’s ’drapery shop and to a grocery on one side, and Mr. W. Peckham’s bakery and tearooms on the other side. The blaze spread thence to the premises of Mr. H. Percy, bootmaker, an unoccupied butcher’/; shop, and an unoccupied blacksmith’s shop, all of which destroyed. Nothing was saved except the contents of the bakery and those of the bootmaker’s shop. Two motor-cars and a motor-lorry were also saved. A motor-cycle was destroyed The origin of the fire is unknown, and the insurances are not available. DEFECTIVE CHIMNEY CAUSES OUTBREAK. Inmates of Mr. L., Dwan’s residence in Woburn Road, Lower Hutt, discovered a fire in the, house about 10 o’clock yesterday morning and immediately called the local brigade, which responded quickly. The blaze was soon suppressed nnd no serious damage was done. The cause of the .fire is said to have been a defective kitchen chimney. ' Be prepared! See that you have adequate insurance on your house and furniture. Consult the Mercantile and General Insurance Co., Ltd., Panama Street. It is a local company with all its capital invested in New Zealand, therefore prompt settlements. —Advt.
