STATE COAL MINES
NEGOTIATIONS FOR FRESH AGREEMENT Negotiations were commenced at a recent conference on the West Coast for the framing of a fresh agreement between the State Coal Miners’ Union and the Mines Department. Mr. A. H. Kiinbell (Under-Secretary of the Department), who attended the conference in an official capacity, informed a DOMINION reporter yesterday that the demands made on behalf of the union included the granting of concessions which were not in operation at any other collierv on the West Coast, and which were additional to those agreed to between the representatives of the West Coast Miners’ Council and the representatives of the New Zealand Coal Owners’ Association at a conference held in Reefton early in May. If such demands were agreed to, said Mr. Kimbell, it would put the operation of the State collieries in a much worse position, from the point of view of competition, than was the case at present. Mr. Kimbell accordingly informed the representatives of the union that he could not personally agree to accede to all their requests, but promised to submit them to the Minister of Mines. That course had since been followed.
