PREPARING FOR ANGLERS

BARGE QUANTITIES OF TROUT LIBERATED. "During the present tubing season, 700 pearling brown trout have been supplied by the council and liberated in the Mangatainoka Biver at the Borough Bridge," states the report of the Pahiatua subcommittee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society in the latter’s annual report. "These were liberated under favourable conditions, and nave, it would appear, established themselves. Eightyfour thousand brown fry were forwarded and liberated as follows:—Mangatainoka River. 24,000; Makakahi River, 20,000; Mangahao Klver (Marima), 10.000; Makuri River, 20.000; Makairo Stream. 5000; Matarua Stream 5000. Total 84,000. Rainbow yearling trout to the number of 500 were forwarded and liberated in Moore’s Creek. Rainbow fry forwarded were 30,000, at:—Moore's Creek (Pori), 7000; Tylee’s Greek, 5000; Makuri River (at Champions). 10,COO; Alpass's Creek. 3000; Hillas’s Creek, 2000; Cameron’s Creek 3000. Total, 30,000. "Of the rivers the Mangatainoka still continues to show steady improvement. The limit has been taken on more than uob occasion, ano an evening's flsnmg with tho liy has yielded as mau.v as eleven from 31b. downwards. The lower reaches of this stream seem to yield the bigger fish. The Makakahi is patronised by most in search of a basket at the beginning or the season, and it seldom disappoints. Fish in the vicinity of 21b. have been taken during the present season. Thve who have visited the Mangahao at Marima report big fish, but they are few and far. between. Tlje stocking of this stream appears to be disappointing, and it is seldom fished. The Makuri has improved on last year’s fishing, but is far from what it was in the nalmv days. However, reports are reassuring, and with heavy stocking we have no doubt that the Makuri will continue to attract tho outside as well as the local angler. From Good Friday until Easter Monday, two rods took 61 fish, weighing as heavy as 311 b. The Manawatu, although just bounding part of this district, is in the opinion of many, the finest, river of all from a sportsman’s point 6t view. Here are manv fine fish, which Have all the fighting attributes which a fisherman wants. The season can be termed an excellent one, good eport being obtainable in most of our streams."
