THE ROYAL SHOW

Sir,—Will you please permit me to take up a little space in the columns of vour paper? Seeing that all agricultural and pastoral associations arc at a loss to know a suitable date for the Royal Agricultural Society’s 1926 show, may I venture a suggestion? As one who has been closely connected with show stock for many years, my experience •is that time is an important factor in the rearing of stud animals. Having read the reports in the papers, I notice that the second week in November is much in favour. Personally I think this is too early for such an important event as the Royal Show. It is harmful to young stock, as it means forcing them unduly, making it hard to maintain the standard through the autumn shows. December and January were originally reserved for shearing. But that is no longer necessary now that the tedious process of hand-shearing is a thing of the past. The tollowing paragraph is taken from the annual report, 1925: —“ Ever since- the formation of a Royal Agricultural Society "'as mooted in New Zealand it has been the unanimous wish of the leaders of the movement to model the proposed society in this Dominion upon the; long established and successful Royal Agricultural Society of England.” The English Royal Show is always held the first week in July, which corresponds to January in New Zealand. January is a month when the Dominion is full of oversea visitors, who, among others, would visit the Royal Show with a view to purchasing.—l am, etc., OBSERVER.
