MASKED AND ARMED MAORIS
ALLEGED ASSAULT ON EUROPEAN By Telegraph.— FitEss Association , Gisborne, March 29. About 11 o’clock on Saturday night, Albert Edward Orange, a saddler, of Ruatoria, was called from his bed by a Maori, who said he had a saddle to be repaired. He gave Orange the saddle, and then said he had some more saddles around the corner. He went awav and came back with two masked Maoris, one of whom was armed with a double-barrelled gun. The three Natives rushed at Orange and violentlv assaulted him.
When Orange recovered he found he had been robbed, and reported the occurrence to the police. Yesterdav afternoon Inspector Eccles and two constables went to the Whenuakura pa, and there arrested three Natives on charges of assaulting and robbing Orange. The shot gun and a saddle are now in the hands of the police. Orange was badlv knocked about.
