RUSSIA’S RED CHURCH
MONASTICISM TO GO. I London, March 28. The Riga correspondent of “Th? Times” says that the self-styled “Holy Synod” of Moscow, representing the Red branch of the Russian Orthodox Church, has decided, apparently under the Soviet’s instructions, to abolish monasticism, declaring that this system has outlived its purpose and does not reflect modern ideas. Therefor- the monks must repudiate their vows and adopt a useful livelihood. It is pointed out that since 1923 many monasteries have continued obscurely, keeping within the law by organising as working communities.
The Soviet has seized St. Izaac’s Cathedral at Leningrad because in the night rowdies stole the external bronze ornamentations. It js believed that the Soviet officials themselves despoiled the exterior as a pretext for seizure.— “Times.”
