NEW YORK’S UNDERWORLD
attempt to reform criminal- — class. New York, March 28. A unique attempt to reform the New -York criminal will be made .by the Marshall Stillman Movement, an organisation which has done special uplift work in the underworld for many years. Mr. Alpheus Gear, son of the founder of the movement, has announced, that low dives will be supplanted by social centres, headed by college men from Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, who would be good mixers, able to play games and talk to the gangster in his own language. Only brawny two-fisted colleigians will.be chosen, adept in the art of self-defence, and able to instill admiration through athletic activities. Mr. Gear hopes, moreover, that the attractiveness of the social centres will induce misled youngsters to, join with college men in their new activities, designed to give the former healthier interests. The centres will also extend their aid to worthy ex-criminals who desire to return to lawful ways.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
