The late Mr. Hugh McConnell, who died in Wellington on Friday at the age of 55 years, was one of the early pioneers in the use of the sheep-shear-ing machine in New Zealand. He started shearing with machines at Otahaike and Station Peak stations near Oamaru in 1890, and was amongst the earliest to shear 200 merino sheep per dav. This was considered a big tally in those davs. He was later chosen to give a shearing demonstration in England, France, Germany, U.S.A., and several other sheep-raising countries. On Mr. McConnell’s return to New Zealand from abroad in 1904 he joined the staff of Messrs. Levin and Co.. Ltd., and has been in charge of their repair shop ever since. He was also for manv vears the firm’s exhibitor at' A. and P. Shows.
