The Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, return|ed to Wellington from Palmerston North yesterday. A Press Association niess-ige from Christchurch states that Major-General R. Young was farewelled by the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association on Thursday night, congratulated on his promotion to the position of General Officer Commanding the Forces, and presented with a badge of life membership. Maior and Mrs. Haviland were passengers yesterday by the Limited from Auckland.
Mr. N. S. Falla, of the Union Steamship Company, will leave for Auckland tq-morrow night.
Mr. A. H. Benham, engineer co the Hutt Countv Council, will leave for the South this evening to attend the Civil Engineers’ Conference, which is to commence at Dunedin on Tuesday morning.
The Director of Education, Mr. J. Caughley, is in the South Island and will remain there for a fortnight or more. Among other things, he will attend the session of the New Zealand University Senate, which opens in Dunedin next Wednesday. Dr. and Mrs. Tillyard left Nelson by the Arahura last night on their way to Auckland to join the Aorangi next Tuesday (states our Nelson correspondent) . They will be away about nine ■ months, visiting America and Europe, where Dr. Tillyard intends to carry out certain researches on problems affecting New Zealand, particularly the control of the blackberry earwig and the spruce aphis. Mr. W. G. Kerr, of Buxton and Co., Nelson, has celebrated his jubilee with the firm, having joined in 1876. Fie has been the recipient of many congratulations from various parts of the Dominion (states our special correspondent) . Dlr. G. 11. Scott, president of the New Zealand Association of British Manufacturers and Agents, will leave Wellington on Tuesday next on an extended visit to the Old Country. At the annual meeting of the association on Thursday evening, Mr. Scott was presented by members of the association with a’ rug.
At the meeting of the Sunday School Union, held on Thursday evening, a motion was passed expressing regret at the death of Mr. Richard Brown, and conveying the union’s sympathy to Mrs. Brown and her family. The late Mr. Frown has for many years been an active worker amongst the young people, and had at different times helped the union in the training of teachers.
