A BOTTLE OF WHISKY
CONFECTIONER’S UNPROFITABLE SALE. By Telegraph.—PttEss Association Auckland, February 12. On New Year’s Day a man bought two “nips” of whisky, and later a bottle of whisky from the proprietor of a confectioner’s shop at Milford Beach. Because the purchaser happened to be a constable in plain clothes, the seller appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning upon a charge of selling whisky without being duly licensed to do so. Defendant pleaded’ guilty. The police stated that the case was an isolated one, and there was no suggestion that defendant was carrying on sly grog-selling. Counsel stated that the constable approached defendant “with his teeth chattering,” and defendant agreed to let him have the whisky for what he had paid for it. The bottle was wrapped up, and was bought by defendant for his own consumption. A fine of £25 and costs was imposed. Defendant’s name was ordered to be suppressed.
