RESPONDENT’S UNUSUAL DEFENCE In the Supreme Court yesterday, before His Honour the Chief Justice (Mr. C. P. Skerrett, K.C.), Edward Adams, a city corporation employee (represented by Mr. M.. F. Luckie), petitioned for a dissolution of his marriage with Margaret Stella Adams (represented by Mr. C: A. L. Ireadwell), on the , ground of frequent acts of adultery alleged to have been committed by respondent with Claes Olsen, waterside worker, o_f Wellington. The acts of. adultery were admitted by respondent, who alleged by way of defence that she was induced to commit them by her husband's cruelty, neglect, drinking, and gambling habits, and the fact that he left her over week-ends in compromising situations.

The evidence showed that petitioner and respondent were married on March 11, 1913, and separated on January 18, 1925, petitioner paying respondent £1 a week. Later she obtained an cider’ compelling him to pay £2 a- week maintenance money out of his wages of £4 ss. Olsen was a boarder at their house. The case w&? adjourned until 10 a.iri. to-dav. /
