The boats belonging to the Takapuna one-design class which were described ns ''coffins” by a member of the Otago Yacht and Motor-boat Association recently, have found favour in Dunedin despite the unkind remarks made about
them. Commenting on the Macandrew Bay regatta, in which one of the Takapuna boats took part, a writer in the “Otago Daily Times” says: “What will the yachtsman who threw scorn at the Takapuna one-design class have to say noir, if he witnessed the 12ft. 6in. sailing dinghy race at Macandrew Bay rogatta on Boxing Day? The race was, won from start to finish by the Tokar puna boat Colleen, which beat . the other dinghies in all points of sailing 1 ia a breeze that was squally at tames. Colleen showeel great superiority over the other boats in beating into thewind. She was sailed bv C. Moller for the first time in a race and beat Frollick, which was conceding her three minutes, by a good margin. When the fleet was beating Colleen sailed closerto the wind, some of the other boats dropping to lee in a manner which gave a better illustration of Colleen’s abilAvalon’s win over Rona in the fourth Sanders Cup trial was very decisive (says “Spindrift”). Getting the best of the start. Avalon, which had the weather berth, improved her position almost immediately and while she was not then sailing as fast as Bonn, she was pointing higher. Rona, on the other hand, was slipping along nicely, but was toi. leeward of Avalon, and when they ’ broke tacks for the first time Avalon was leading. Ones in that position she was never headed and always had the upper hand, finally winning bv 3min. 52sec.‘
