ROWING
(By
‘Sculls.")
The northerly wind which blew last Saturday necessitated oarsmen travelling to Petone for the social lours, in which fifteen crews from the three plubs competed. Tho final was won by Warden’s crew by a length and a half, after an exciting and very close race. The crews were split up so that members representing I’etoue, Star, and Wellington, would be rowing in the same boat. The following were tlie members of tho winning crew: Warden, stroke (Petone), McArthur (Petone), Shanley (Wellington), Comerford (Star). Cooke's crew, which consisted of the following members, was second; Cooke, stroke (Star), Duncan (Petone), Peacocke (Wellington), Wilson (Petone). The aim of the founder of this race was to stimulate among the clubs a spirit of good-fellowship which would make for greater individual friendliness among the members. Truly a commendable object, which should certainly achieve its purpose. Provided the weather is fine, next Saturday will bring a resumption of the club races, namely, the Mothes Cup, competed for by senior pairs, and the Harland Cup, for junior pairs. At a meeting of tho executive of ths Canterbury Rowing Association in Christchurch last week, the chairman (Mr. F. D. Kesteran) pointed out that: under the old rules an amateur oareman could compete for cash prizes in other sports, but an alteration was maxlo in 1920 whereby an amateur rower must be an amateur in every other branch of athletic sport. The effect of the new rule, he stated, was that it was debarring cvclists from competing in rowing event's. A sub-committee was appointed to draw up a circular on the matter, which will be sent to the other associations in New Zealand and to tlie New Zealand Rowing Council. The programme for the New Zealand championship regatta, to bo held at Dunedin on March 6, was placed on the table for inspection at a meeting or the executive of the Canterbury Association Inst week. The chairman remarked that tho prize money was very good indeed.
