THE SANDERS CUP.
PEGGY SELECTED TO GO TO DUNEDIN
At a meeting of the Sanders Cup representative selection sub-connnittee of the R.P.N.Y.C., held yesterday morning, the selectors (Messrs. AV. Duncan, G. Bothamley, and 11. Hardham) chose Peggy as 'Wellington’s challenger for the Sanders -Memorial Cup contest, which will commence at Dunedin on February 19. Mr. A. G. Crawford, who has sailed Peggy so ably in tho trial contests, has been selected as skipper of the boat. The crew will bo announced next week.
Altogether eight trial contests were sailed, and Peggy won seven of them. Ono race she lost by a second to Welles, ley, after one of the most exciting finishes seen in Wellington for many a day, and in another trial which was abandoned owing to mishaps to tho ether competitors, Peggy was the only boat to finish, and had a commanding lead at the time when the race was called off.
The Peggy was built in 1920 by Air. E. R. Bailey, of Wellington, and was purchased by Mr. E. R. Clumies-Ross. The latter also had the Eyenon built by Mr. Bailey. Eyeuou represented Wellington in the cup race at Auckland in 1923, but was unsuccessful. Peggy represented the province in the 1924 contest, which was held on AA’ellington Harbour, but she did not qualify. This year Peggy has shown, a remarkable improvement, and has proved herself a splendid all-round craft, being good in both breezy and in light weather. There is no douibt that the Peggy, in the hands of Mr. Crawford, stands a very good chance of bringing the coveted trophy to the capital city.
