CRIMINAL AT LARGE
ESCAPES FROM MOUNT EDEN PRISON

Auckland, January 18.
Up to a late hour to-night an habitual criminal, Pene Karakiakore, a Maori, aged 26, who escaped from the quarry nt Mount Eden-Prison this morning, had not been recaptured. He is reported to have been making off along tiie Auburn Road in front of the gaol towards Khyber Pass.
The alarm was given, and a large party of warders set out after the escapee. They were reinforced by five policemen from the city station and officers from sub-stations. The trail led to the 'Domain, where Pene is reported to have been sighted. The area and its surroundings were scoured but the Maori was not discovered. Later, however, he was seen further afield, going in the direction of Orakei. He was sentenced to two years’ hard labour and declared an habitual criminal in February, 1924, on charges of breaking, entering, and theft at Auckland.
