BOWLS

EXHIBITION TOURNEY PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP BEGUN By Tjslegbax’H.—Press Association. Dunedin, January 18. 'At the Dominion bowling tourney the pairs championship commenced to-day in fine weather. The greens were keen, but a fairly stiff wind made accurate play difficult. Two rounds were completed, but the third was' interrupted at about 5.45 p.m. by a heavy thunderstorm and torrential rain. A few gameij were completed, but the majority are about three-quarters of the way through. Play was postponed for the day. The unfinished games, will be completed at 8.30 to-morrow morning. Entries for the pairs total 23!?. Fourteen British pairs entered, but only 11 competed. Results:— SECTION Ai

In the first round, JMacdougall (British party) scored twice as rapidly as Beer (Riverton) in the first 10 heads, when the former was leading by 10 points to 5. After that, however, the Riverton pair did nearly all the scoring, the overseas players getting in on only three heads. Jlacdougall retired at the eighteenth end, when Beer was leading by 23 points to 13. In Section D, played at Balmacewen, the 1924 champion pair, J. Angus and J. A. Redpath (Canterbury), proved too strong for Laws and Morgan (Beckenham) . In the first round, Morgan held the lead to the ninth head, 7—4. In the following five ends Redpath had a scoring run to 16 points, and ran out the winner by 19 to 16. Hadlee (West End, Auckland) was set a hard task to catch Wade (British party) in the first round. The English’ pair had scored on each of the first seven heads, being 14 up. Hadlee scored 10 in the next four heads. A 3 to Wade gave him another nice head. Hadlee played strongly, and six heads later was 2 up, 21—19. The game was one of changing fortunes, for Wade then scored 3 and 4, leaving Hadlee to score 6 on the last head to win. The Aucklander scored only 2. The Hardley brothers (West End, Auckland) had a comfortable win over Seelye (Kaituna), winning all the way nnd finishing 8 up at the twentieth head.

Beyland retired, Wade having a winning margin of 14 points, Wade’s play was a feature because of the vast superiority of Scott (Caledonian). His match witli Mazey, who played as substitute for Brodie’s British party pair, was a poor one. Scott opened with 6, and Ins opponents retired on the nineteenth head, when Scott was leading by 34 to 15. Forrester, of Caversham, got 5 on Casey, of Carlton, on the last head, but was still a point in arrears. Routley (Keiburn) had such a runaway victory from Davies (Edgeware), that the players considered him a likelv section winner. Davies opened well, scoring a pair, but Routley scored 3,5, 5,3, 1 in successive heads. Another 2 to Davies, a single to Routley, and another single to Davies ended in the Edgeware pair scoring. Routley took the next head, and after the seventeenth Davies retired with the score against him of 37 to 17. I’oster (Caledonian) should be well up at the finish if his singles play is any criterion. He won by 20 to 14 against Aingcr (Christchurch), but he had to fight hard to keep his lead. The pairs were level, 13-13, at the sixteenth head. A pair to Foster two heads later gave him a winning margin. In the first round Bremner (West End, Auckland), had a narrow scrape home against Anderson (Roslyn). He had the game safe, and at the eighteenth head was well in front. However, the home pair outplayed them, 1 scoring 1,4, and 5 on the last three heads.’ HUTT CLUB.
