NELSON NEWS
IRREGULAR PROCEDURE
By Teljigkaj’h—Special Correspondent.
Nelson, January 18.
Tn the Magistrate’s Court to-day a number of informations against citizens in respect to the illegal use of hose were dismissed. Some time ago the town clerk (Mr. G. A. Edmonds) was appointed a Justice of the Peace and in the course of his duties as town clerk lie signed the informations. The town clerk being also a J.P., rendered the whole proceedings irregular. One resident who did not have legal advice explained the circumstances and was ordered to pav 7s. costs, and the next case was proceeding when Air. Ivemmtz, for defendant, mentioned the irregularity, not, he said, with any endeavour to “take advantage of it.” The Magistrate (Mr. T. E. Maiinsell): “But it is a valid objection. I must take notice of it. There is no doubt that a Justice who takes informations must be entirely disinterested. The town clerk no doubt thought he was studying the convenience of the people, but the.whole thing was irregular.’* The Magistrate dismissed the informations and the previous case was then struck outThe committee of the Nelson Bowling Club has decided to light the top green by electricity. The decision was brought alxmt by an evident desire on the part of many members to participate in evening or after tea play. The response to the committee’s appeal for financial assistance has been most satisfactory and will enable the work to be undertaken without trespassing . upon the club's funds. Provision is made for four 1000 watt lights, enabling the green to be used from any direction. The-work will be put in hand at once, and it is Imped to have an opening night on January 27.
