THE RACING WORLD

PREPARATIONS FOR TRENTHAM SUMMER MEETING

TRACK AND OTHER NOTES

(By. “The Watcher.”) It rained heavily at Trentham yesterday morning for an hour or more after breakfast, and the downpour would greatly benefit the tracks. In fact, twelve hours solid rain immediately prior to the racing would not come amiss.

Good Sport seldom visits Trentham without putting himself in the limelight for fast track work, and his gallop over six furlongs on the grass yesterday was one of his best efforts.

Fool’s Paradise and Black Cat sprintfed very well over four furlongs yesterday. The former has • always been doing well in his work, but the filly’s effort was her best- on the track so far.

Star Ranger and Star. .Stranger will be coupled in the Wellington Cup. This is due to a registered contingency between Messrs. Toxward and Williams wtiich operates over Star Stranger in all races of £5OO value and over. With Grand Knight, Fool’s Paradise, and Royal Divorce coupled, and now Star Stranger and Star Ranger, the public is going to get a rare opportunity for a dividend if they all start, amounting to ten chances for two tickets.

Elysianor and King Broney. Joy Bird and Gay Bird, i Peggy Ford and Mint Leaf.

Rangimoana and Tannadice.

The presence of visiting Cup horses lent much more interest to the training work at Trentham yesterday morning, and track watchers were treated to one or two fast mile gallops. Although carrying a light weight in his gallop yesterday Star Stranger, who is not 'a particularly good track worker, wa,s responsible for a good effort over a mile, and there is no doubt he has gone on the right way since lie raced at the Auckland meeting. The Banker put a good mile behind him 'yesterday, but he appeared to be doing his best, and it is just possible that the preparation for the two big cup races of the season has set him back for the time being. He has not done a great deal at Hawera since he raced at Auckland, a couple of sprints over half a mile and six furlongs be; ing his only fast work prior to yesterday’s gallop. Consequently the workout yesterday is perhaps a little better than it would appear. Before doing his gallop The Banker, who has been under offer to an Australian buyer, was thoroughly examined by a veterinary surgeon on behalf of the purchaser, and the test was satisfactory, with the result that the Kilbroney gelding may change hands, the sum mentioned being 3000 guineas. Certain details in connection with the sale await confirmation by cablegram from Melbourne, and if satisfactorily arranged the deal will be completed. If sold. The Banker will be withdrawn ' from the Wellington Cup, and be sent over to Australia at once.

The two-year-old True Blood has been withdrawn from the Wellington Stakes. Having missed 1-1, Goldfinch for Muraalii in the Wellington Cup, R. Brough has offered the ride to D. C. Watts.

If The Banker starts in the Wellington Cup he will be ridden by L. G. Morpis. Royal Divorce will then be ridden by Keesiug, while a light-weight will be found for Fool’s Paradise, if lie starts.

Grand Knight was not galloped yesterday. He has been treated to a light dose of physic, and will do his final work out this morning.

Mimetic gave his near front heel a bad cut when lie got cast in his box at Auckland, and it is still a nasty looking opening. He is quite sound on it, however, and is galloping as freely as ever.

The Southlander Set Sail showed yesterday morning that she knows how to sprint by leaving six furlongs behind her in very smart time. Set Sail will probably be ridden in the Telegraph Handicap by L. J- Tillis, although no definite arrangement will be made until the arrival of the owner of the mare on the morning of the race. Te Monanui galloped very nicely yesterday morning in company with Listening Post, and carried a lot more weight. E. Gedrgc’s team all look particularly well., Old Surveyor looks as well as ever, and it will be a great feat if he brings off the Wellington Cup for the second year in succession.

Star Ranger presents a problem so far as his chances in the Wellington Cup are concerned. There will be no fitter horse in the race, but whether he will act up to his condition is another matter. For a horse who commenced the season with a win in the Avondale Cup he has come down a long way ill the weights, and has only got to gallop like he does on the tracks and he would cause a lot of trouble.

Lady Cavendish sprinted brilliantly at Trentham yesterday morning, and there is no doubt she will make a bold bid to win her second successive Wellington Stakes.

The Thorn, Deluge, Mask, Anklet, Elysianor, Elthein, Demure, Enthusiasm, Limited, Tamatete, and Ohui arrived at Trentham yesterday. Heavy rain fell for nearly an hour at Wanganui on Saturday morning, but so far from making the local tracks holding, it served to sharpen them up (says the “Chronicle”). Most of the work was done in a light drizzle, and further rain fell solidly before breakfast. The Thorn (W. Ravner) and Deluge (W. Mitchell) went five furlongs in fine stvle. They had pace on passing the peg, and they got to the end of the first quarter in 23 4-ssec., three furlongs in 35 4-ssec., and the full distance in Imin. 1 4-ssec., the pair finishing together. The Thorn was on the rails and Deluge on the outside of him all the wav, and it was a good gallop on the part of both horses. Vanninia (E. Copcstake) was slow in moving off the mark when he stood at the three-furlong post coming hoihe in 39 3-ssec. lhe first furlong was slow, occupying 14 2-ssec. This full brother to Te Kawa is to be given a run at Foxton. Pardon shaped nicelv in a flutter with Royal Elm and Adavale over half a mile in 49 3-ssec., the first quarter taking 24sec. Roval Elm was stopping badlv in the straight. Wembley (W.j

Young) performed fairly well in a circuit of the schooling hurdles. Motley (W. Rayner) did an easy half-mile, running the first quarter in 24 2-ssec., and the four furlongs in 50 l-ssec. Demure was sent round twice at good three-quarter pace and was speeded up over the last three furlongs, which took -lOsec. Elthein did half-pace work, being sprinted up the straight. Anklet (W. Mitchell) and Mask (W. Rayner) were both in front of Elysiauor (light weight) over seven furlongs, the lastnamed being half a dozen lengths behind after going a couple of furlongs, and he was a length away, at the post. They ran the first quarter in 26 l-ssec., half-mile in 50 2-ssec., five furlongs in Imin. 3 3-ssec., and the seven furlongs in Imin.' 31 3-ssec.

The following horses in the Ruapehu Handicap to-morrow will be coupled on the machine owing to the number of starters exceeding the dial accommodation of the totalisator at Trenthani:—

The Woodville and Hawke’s Bay contingent arrived at Trentham during yesterday afternoon, and with the arrival of Nincompoop and Haze from the south this morning the visitors’ list will be iust about complete. The Wellington Racing Club has decided to reduce the charge for admission of ladies to the lawn at Trentham to 45., which will mean only 2s. to those who travel to the course on a railway ticket. No complimentary tickets for ladies are being issued for this meeting, not even to members of the club. B. Burgess, the Opaki owner-trainer, had a stroke of bad luck last week when the yearling colt by Thurnham-Pitbrow Lass, purchased at • the Christchurch yearling sales, broke a front leg while running in the paddock, and had to be destroyed.

Merry Day was last week turned out at Pahiatua for a lengthy spell.

TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES SOME INTERESTING GALLOPS Monday. The weather was fine for training work, which was the most interesting to date on account of the presence of so many visiting horses, and amongst those who galloped were well-fancied candidates for the Wellington Cup, including Star Stranger, 'Die Banker, Gala Day, Muraahi, Te Monanui, and Listening Post, in addition to local horses. Practically all the work was done on the tan, which was in good order and fast. The two Aucklanders Dal Eaton and Letter of Credit worked down the back of the course,, the first-named running a half in OOsec., and Letter of Credit three furlongs in 40scc. Star Ranger ran' twice round and sprinted three furlongs down the straight each time in 40sec. C. Eastwood rode him.

Star Stranger, with a light boy up, and picked up by Gauntlet (R. Reed) at the six-furlong ’post, galloped about eight furlongs and a half. Timed from the mile post he ran Imin. Ilscc., and he beat his companion home. Gauntlet is sore, but it is unusual for a work-out to produce a loser in the horse that does the picking up, and Star Stranger’s effort, despite his light weight, must be considered highly satisfactory. The Banker (G. Ingram), Muraahi (light-weight) and Gala Bay (J. Olsen) galloped a mile. Muraahi began to tail olf after four or five furlongs, and the Banker beat Gala Day home by a length or two in Imin. 44 3-ssec.—an-other good gallop, although The Banker did not seem to be putting much Hash into his work. It was a good mile for Gala Day, who was carrying most weight. Royal Pointer beat Matu fairly comfortably ‘ over six furlongs in Imin. 20sec

Wristlet and Nine of Spades ran six furlougs in Imin. 17 2-ssec., both doing well.

Mimetic (R. Reed) comfortably held My Hobby (apprentice) all the way in a sprint over half a mile run in 50 2-ssec. Agitato and The Tank ran well over seven furlongs, taking Imin. 31sec., the first four in 51 2-ssec. For their class it was a really good gallop. Modern, picked up by Peggy Ford, galloped a mile very pleasingly in Imin. 44sec., equal to the best of the Cup horses, the last five furlongs in Imin. Csec.

Lady Cavendish had Pelham as a companion in a sprint over four furlongs. She drew away from him over the last bit, and ran 48 2-ssec.—a brilliant effort. Pelham ran well and was two lengths away. Fool’s-Paradise and Black Cat followed in their tracks, and took just a fraction longer—-Fool’s Paradise in front—and both could have improved on it. With a light boy in the saddle, Listening Post finished'just clear of Te Monanui, who -had some weight up, over a mile, which took Imin. 45sec. Both galloped well, and under a stronger boy Listening Post could have improved, ■while Te Monanui ran very well and is undoubtedly in great buckle at the present time. 'The last seven furlongs were run in Imin. 31sec. On the grass, which wasjiard and fast. Good Sport, alone, ran a fast six furlongs in Imin. 15 3-ssec., doing the last three in 35 4-ssee. Licinius, alone, galloped freely without being extended, over four furlongs in 51 3-ssec.

Surveyor, who looks well, ran six furlongs bv himself in Imin. 20sec. Roval’Divorce took 50 4-ssec. for four furlongs. Oration and Royal Mint, over half a mile, took 51sec., and Hipo, sent to go over the same distance, was well past

the post when he started, taking 37 2-ssec. for three furlongs. . Set Sail was too good for Tione over six furlongs, run in the smart time of imin. 16sec., one of the best sprints in training. Fn Route, who looks very well, was trotted and cantered by 11. McSwccney in the centre of the course. Orchid was not asked to gallop, nor was Toiumv Dodd, Economist, Battlement, or Torque, who did useful tasks. The two last-named arc well-grown youngsters. • . , i tr Kilperon and Glen Innes sprinted half-a-milc in 4'J l-sscc., both doing their best.

egmont nominations

The Egmont Racing Club has every reason to be satisfied with tliu nominations that have been received for its summci meeting, which Aaltos place at Hawera. on February 3 ana 4.
