WATER FOR SEATOUN HEIGHTS

NEW SERVICE RESERVOIR SITE SECURED Residents may, with a certain amount of security, anticipate a gravity water supply by the middle of next summer. Some time ago, under the authorisation of the National Board of Health, the City Council was authorised to borrow a sufficient sum of money to finance the reticulation of Seatoun Heights for water and drainage—from the tramway tunnel to the southward of the Northern Defence Reserve—-an extensive area of hilly land cast of Miramar flat. The council last year accepted the tender of John Duthie and Co. for the supply of pipes. These arc not yet to hand, but supplies will arrive in the course of a few weeks, when the work of laying them will be undertaken. The water and drainage engineer (Mr. J. M. Morice) has located section No. 76, on the Seatoun Heights Road, as the highest point on the area to be served, and that section (which was the property of Mr. Patrick Galvin) has been taken under the Public Works Act for the purpose of a high-level service reservoir. The site of the new reservoir is only a couple of hundred yaids or so from the existing reservoir, but it is 198 feet higher, and will, when supplied (by pumping from the mains down on the flat) be able to serve all points on the range. The construction of the new reservoir, which will have a capacity of 60,000 gallons, has not yet been commenced, but now that the newest high level reservoir for Karori, of the same dimensions and capacity, has been completed, the plant will be transferred to Seatoun Heights, and the work proceeded with in the course of a few days.
