WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT
OPENING AT MIRAMAR COURT A meeting of the Management Committee of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association was held yesterday afternoon, there being present— Messrs. N. A. Foden (chairman), F. T. Clere, H. T. Graves, C. L. Mayo, E. Reeves, W. G. Morgan, F. Cornet, C. G. Swinburne, and A. J. McLennan (hon. secretary).
Messrs. J. C. Peacock (president of the Wellington Association), G. N. Goldie (vice-president), and D. M. Kean (supervising architect of the Miramar court scheme) were also in attendance. Various sub-committees in connection with the forthcoming Wellington provincial tournament at Miramar on January 21, 22, 23, and 25 were set up, and all arrangements in connection with the tournament were completed. It was decided to arrange for bus transport for the players and the public, and particulars of the time-tables were drawn up. Arrangements for refreshments on a site adjacent to the courts will’ be mads in the course of a day or two, so that players and spectators will he adequately catered for in this direciion. It is expected that a telephone will be available on the ground, so that playei-s will be able to ascertain when they will be required for matches, and be able to keep in touch with the city and their residences. Timt-s of matches will be notified in the Press as far ae possible in advance. As the permanent galleries provided for spectators have not yet been erected, temporary stands are being built for the accommodation of spectators and waiting players. The charge for admission for spectiv tors was fixed at Is. for each whole day. Small charts of the draw in the championship events will be available for players and others at a nominal charge. The secretary (Mr. A. J. McLellan) is to have complete charge of the tournament, and will also have control of all committees. Mr. J. A. B. How:- was appointed referee. All appeals on points arising out of any of the matches are to be made to Mr. Howe per medium of the secretary. Every effort is bring made to cater for the comfort of the -players, and it the weather is favourable the tournament should be a most pleasurable and successful one. Oiwng to the absence of a number of local players, who are still attending other tournaments, the time for accepting entries has been extended until 8 p.m. on Saturday next. ! CANTERBURY v. OTAGO WON BY T ONE SET. Br Telegraph.-Press Association. Dunedin, January 14. The annual interprovincial tennis match between Otago and Canterbury was played to-day on the Anderson’s Bay courts in beautiful weather. As was anticipated, the visiting ladies proved much stronger than their opponents, and won all tlieir matches, both singles and doubles. Otago’s men, on the other hand, won all their singles and two out of three of the doubles matches. The final result was extremely close, Otago winning by one set. The scores were: — Otago, 12 matches, 28 sets. 237 games. Canterbury, 12 matches, 27 sets, 231 : games. The details are as follow: — !
