BARRIER NO LONGER
transfer of cars across ■ STRAIT Cook Strait used to be a fairly effective barrier to the touring motorist, but with the Dunedin Exhibition as a lure at the other end of the South Island, and better facilities for the transpoitation of cars, the Strait holds no terrors for the man who wants to sit behind the wheel the whole journey through. Within fifteen days from December 21, no fewer than 234 privatelyowned motor-cars were shipped away from Wellington. Of these 168 were consigned to Picton, 47 to Lyttelton, and 16 to Dunedin. The new steamer Tamahine has special accommodation below deck for motor-cars, but such was the rush on Christmas Eve that a cargo steamer had to make a trip across the Strait to Picton to convey all the cars offering.
