CITY MANAGEMENT
Sir,—The manner in which money was frittered awav on Reading Street, Karori, is a striking example of the necessity for “civic . management,.” which would surelv avoid such a position as has arisen at Island Bay. Twenty men were employed for four months on a side street about five hundred yards long, and the wages bill alone must have been about £lOOO. At one end sft. Bin. was taken from the crown of the road. Fortunately a protest from the residents prevented one thousand yards of metal being placed at the other end of the street, which is not yet paved or channelled. The sides of the cutting are falling down and will cause further expense. In the subdivision department there is also room for a clean up. It is stipulated that certain. things be done according to the city by-laws. A request that the seller be compelled to carry out the council’s own instructions, or that an indemnity be given to the buver, is ignored. One of the first to interview the city manager will be— Yours, etc., HOPEFUL.Wellington, January 6.
