TYPHOID EPIDEMIC

THIRTY-FIVE CASES IN CHICAGO

OUTBREAK TRACED TO DISEASE-CARRIER

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright New York, December 27. There are thirty-five cases of typhoid in Chicago Three deaths have occurred, and five other cases are still serious. The epidemic lias been traced to Margaret Benge, an eighty-year-old typhoid carrier. The State Health Commissioner states that in November last Margaret Benge cooked a squash taken from her garden, and that everyone who ate this dish caught the disease malignantly.

Margaret Benge had typhoid in the ’sixties, and was years ago recognised as a carrier. She agreed to avoid handling other people’s food, and promised not to mingle with people outside her home.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
