- $ M. LEADBETTER COVERS 300 YARDS IN EVEN TIME. Bi Telegbaph—SPecial- Correspondent Christchurch, December 27. A notable Wellington athlete played a prominent part at the Halsweli sjxirts on Boxing Day. 'M. Loadbetter, the well-known sprint champion, competed in tho 300 yards Canterbury championship, and succeeded in winning by three yards. The time was aunounced as 30 3-ssec., which is an extraordinarily goal performance if the tiack is corroot . Fast times were the order of the dav in both running aud cycling. The track, a clay one, on which cinders have been strewn, made for fast times, and therefore Lcadbettcr’s run, although occasioning a big surprise, is probably not very far out. At any rate, three watches agreed. Lcadbottcr entered for several other events, but misunderstood the time the sports were to start, and did not arrive on the ground until the afternoon. Consequently he ran In only one race. The high jump handicap, won by G. Flighty, an ex-Welliugton Technical College boy, who cleared 5 feet 5 inches, including a. handicap of three inches. He would have done even better than this had not his take-off been a bad O’ l ®- , • L C [As the 300 yards is not one of the regular distances, difficulty was experienced in placing a finger on the existing Dominion record for it. Nevertheless, Leadbelter’s time touches evens, and that alone must bring him in close contact with present best timed
