CHRISTMAS WEEK TRAFFIC RECORDS LIKELY Boats and trains coming to Wellington of late have been full, but boats going south have been crammed in every comer. The South Island is the Mecca of the majority this Christmas, the Dunedin. Exhibition, the New Zealand tenuis championships at Christchurch, the prospects of a regatta at Picton, _ the beauties of the Sounds, the Milford track, and the Southern Alps, making their appeal irresistibly to the multitude. Never before has the railway service in the South Island been called on to cope with such a mass of humanity intent on reaching their destination without waste of precious hours, so that the holiday season may be enjoyed to the full. The authorities are unable yet to give figures, but everyone consulted agreed that the totals will be a big advance _on last rear’s figures, although certain places, particularly in the North Island, will show a slight falling-nil. V\ ithin the last week nearly 10,000 people have gone south. The traffic to Auckland has been exceptionally heavv.
