LOW RATE NOT GENERAL

A gentleman who recently returned from a tour of Europe speaks. of the surprising ignorance in New Zealand regarding the postage rates on letters for European countries. While abroad he received many letters from New Zealand which were short-paid, and in order to obtain them, he was under the necessity of paying fines representing double the amounts of the deficiencies. The New Zealand letter rate for places within the British Empire, and for certain other countries, is Id. an ounce. This low rate does not apply, however, throughout the world. On letters for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France. Germany, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and certain other countries, the postage rate for letters is 2}d. for the first ounce and lid. for each additional ounce.
