HANDLING CARGO

WELLINGTON PORT

RECORD

Returns recently made by the Wellington Harbour Board regarding the discharge of cargo at the Port of Wellington go to show what an excellent record this port has in this respect. It has been said that a daily discharge of a thousand tons of cargo is good work for anv port, but Wellington has better figures than that among her daily averages. Of course, much depends upon the nature of the cargo rather than its mere dead-weight or measurement; but the following returns indicate the good daily average of cargo unloaded at Wellington:— Masula, from Peiisaczda, 1265 tons; Retnuera, from London, 1156 tons; Tahiti, from San Francisco, 1345 tons, 1123 tons, 1123 tons, 1316 tons, 1121 tons; Ruahiue, from London, 1229 tons, HO5 tons; Sussex (Eastern caro-o), 129 tons; Corinna, coastal (refrigerated cargo), 1001 tons; Corinthic, from London, 1061 tons, 1059 tons; Canadian Conqueror, from Canada, 1169 tons; lonic, from London, 1131 tons; Port Hunter, from London, 1208 tons; Atholl, from Montreal, 1266 tons. Steamers bringing Portland cement in bags from the North of Auckland show very heavy outputs of cargo, ranging from 1169 to 15-11 tons, the nine steamers listed averaging over 1370 tons per day. The loading ports of the various overseas steamers named will give some idea of the general character of their cargo.
