ESSAY COMPETITION.

Tho prize-winners in the S.P.C.A.’s essay competition arc as follow.-—ln the secondary division, the first, second and third prizes are awarded tc Tessa Burnett, Sheila Milne, and Alice Fcatonby respectively. Tn the primal y division, the first, second, third and sixth awards go to John Nicholls, Lois Moir, Myla Burnett, and Paulino Mo wait. Tiie judges’ report appears io make a highly appreciative note of the work of the young essayists, and is as follows: — “We are of ih'o opinion that the essays sent from the primary schools adhere more closely to the subject selected. Some of the essays from the secondary schools, however, show originality of Uiouglit aud qiiaintness of expression. In awarding places to the various competitors it. should, we think, be stressed that wo have taken into account, not only writing, o -mposition, and style, but also the traces of original thought. ■ ■ .”
