SALE OF CITY LANDS
BY PUBLIC AUCTION RECOMMENDATION OF HOUSING COMMITTEE As the idea of getting a large sum of money for housing at a reasonable rate seemed remote, it was proposed by Councillor G. A. Troup (chairman of the Housing Committee) that certain lands held by the City Council might be made available to the public at reasonable prices to induce people to build privately, the money so procured to be expended in connection with housing. Following up this proposal the Housing Committee proposed last evening that certain sections should be sold by auction at upset prices: “That the following sections owned by the council be submitted to public auction at the upset prices fixed by the city valuer Stokes Street sections: Lots 1,2, 3,4, £lO per foot; lot 5, £l2 per foot; lots 6 and 7, £ll per foot. Councillor McKeen was opposed to the disposal of sections within the city boundaries, in view’ of the council’s housing scheme. He did not see whv any sections should be sold at present. “What fund will the money go into?” asked Councillor Monteith. Councillor Troup said that at the last meeting it was recommended that the money derived from' such sales should be used, where possible, for building. The Mayor said that the money would have to go to various funds,, depending on the circumstances attached to their purchase. The recommendation was adopted. Councillor Troup asked 'what steps, if any, the Finance Committee had taken to procure the £50,000 for the housing scheme. The Mayor replied that he had taken steps to find out the state of the money market locally, but he had not yet been advised as to the position. He could not say anything further on the matter at present, except that the rates of interest for the money available were not as favourable as they wopld like.
