Their Honours Mr. Justice Sim, Mr. Justice Reed, Mr. Justice Adams, and Mr. Justice Ostler were engaged in the Supreme Court yesterday hearing legal argument in an appeal by C. S. Clarke and Company, Wellington, merchants, against the verdict of the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) in favour of the Wellington District Poultry Farmers Association. The grounds of the appeal were that the verdict was wrong in law and in fact. In the lower court respondent association was successful in its claim for £284 19s. 4d„ being the balance alleged to be owing by appellant company for goods said to have been ordered and delivered to and accepted bv it. Decision was reserved. 'lt is not often that champagne is used as a fire extinguisher. Such was the case at a wedding reception .at Masterton recently (says the “Age”). A guest dropped a lighted match through slats in the veranda and dry leaves beneath began to burn. With presence of mind-, but obvious sorrow, another guest poured his champagne through the slats. preventing the spreading of the fire.
