FOR COMPENSAClaims by relatives of the late crew of the Ripple, which was lost at sea with all on board while on a voyage from Wellington to Port Ahunri, were made against Messrs. Richardson and Company, Ltd., Port Ahunri, shipowners, Napier, at the Arbitration Court ye The d mother of the late Bernard Johansen, seaman, Maline Johansen, married -woman, of Liverpool, applied lor £3OO compensation on the grounds that she and her husband, Hilmar Johansen, were partially dependent on the deceased’s earnings. Mr. G. G. G. Watson, for the company, and Mr, P. J. O’Regan, for the plaintiff, agreed upon compensation amounting to £2OO and costs. Delia Polkinghorne claimed £ ‘ bu compensation oh the grounds that, she was the mother, by previous marriage, of Daniel Patrick Crawford, another member of the Ripple crew, and partially dependent on his earnings. J>C ceased had given her £6 a month, stated plaintiff, for the last three years. Mr W. E. Watson appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. G. G. G. Watson for the company. Mr Watson agreed that the amount plaintiff was likelv to receive from her son in the future was .an entirely precarious amount that might cease next week, or next vear, by reason of the fact that her son, aged 26, wa* of a marriageable age. ■ hlr. Justice Frazer said that seeing this was a case where the deceased was a voting man who might have become married, there was no reason why the Court should extend the term to anything beyond the usual three years The Court awarded compensation of £l6O and costs.
