EUROPEAN SECURITY
“POSITION LIKE A JIGSAW
PUZZLE”

DIPLOMATIC OUTLOOK STILL FLUID
The British Foreign Secretary on his return to London is reported to have likened the security position in Europe to a jigsaw puzzle in which some of the pieces will not fit.

Cabinet has received a report from the Foreign Secretary (Mr. A. Chamberlain) on the results of his Geneva and Paris conversations.
The “Daily Telegraph’s” diplomatic correspondent says: “Mr. Chamberlain likened the security position to a jigsaw puzzle,, the pieces of which are lying chaotically, some requiring trimming in order to fit them in. It may be necessary for some to be rejected, and others inserted instead. Moreover, it is understood that it was stated with surprise that proposals • may be forthcoming from Washington at any moment such as would modify the speed and order of procedure. It is admitted that Dr. Benes’s proposal to divide Europe into two groups of nations, western afid eastern, each bound by a security pact, might help in a solution. One fact that is clear, however, is that the European diplomatic outlook is still fluid and will require months to cry-stallise.”—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
