AUCKLAND CUSTOMS COLLECTOR (by telegraph—Special correspondent.* Auckland, March 22. Mr. J. P. Ridings, Collector of Customs in Auckland, is to retire from the service of the Customs Department at the end of this month. Mr. Ridings has a period of 49 years’ service in the Department to his record. He was bom in Nelson and received his secondary education at the Auckland Grammar School. Since he joined the Customs Department in 1876 he has been appointed to posts at most of the principal ports of the Dominion. In 1895 he was appointed Collector at Oamaru, and later at Hokitika, and then at Dunedin. Sixteen years ago Mr. Ridings came to Auckland to take up his present position. He is probably the best-knowri figure in the Customs Service of the Dominion. No official announcement has yet been made regarding Mr. Ridings’ successor.
