Sir James Gunson (Mayor of Auckland) has arranged temporary leave of absence from bis ffiities until April 8. He will visit Wellington and make an effort to finalise negotiations with the Government concerning construction of the waterfront highway from Auckland to Orakei. On his return to his Mayoral post Sir Janies Gunson will, attend to several important municipal matters before retiring from office In the first week in May, after a notable career, marked by efficiency, energy, and remarkable civic progress. It is Sir James Gunson’s intention after his retirement to take a recuperative holiday before re-entering commercial life, says our Auckland correspondent. It is reported by a Press Association message from London that General Sir William Birdwood liasy been appointed Commander-in-Chief in India, and also promoted to the rank of. Field Marshal.
Brigadier-General Hart and party, from Masterton, are on a wapiti shooting expedition at Manapouri. Commissioner Unsworth, of the Salvation Armv, was a passenger on the Marama, which left for Sydney on Saturday. Mr. A. E. Shrimpton, telegraph engineer, is visiting Christchurch. Messrs. R. Hill. George Cooper, and H. Amos have gone on a deer shooting expedition in the Pembroke district, Otago. Mr. E. N. Gtinsaulns, who is retiring from' the position cf United States Consul-General, is vi.ffi.ing Queenstown.
