SUBSTANTIAL DROP FOR WEEK DIPHTHERIA ON DECLINE Hie diphtheria outbreak is on the decline, and there is a substantial drop in the number of other infectious diseases, according to the bulletin for the Wellington health district for the week which ended at noon yesterday. Some 37 cases of diphtheria were reported from the. Cook, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Ilawera, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Wellington, and Nelson hospital areas, as against 51 for the previous week. Palmerston North headed the list with 11 cases, a decrease of two in that district. Scarlet fever eases decreased by six, but slight increases were recorded in the cases of pneumonic influenza and tuberculosis. The returns from the various hospital districts were as follow: — Cook: Scarlet fever, 1; diphtheria, 1; tuberculosis, 2. Wairoa: Enteric fever, 1.; tuberculosis. 1. Hawke’s Bay: Diphtheria, 2; tuberculosis, 1; erysipelas, 1. Waipawa: Enteric fever, 1; pneumonia. 1. Taranaki: Scarlet fever, 1; diphtheria, 7. Stratford: Enteric fever, I; pneumonic influenza, 1. Hawera: Diphtheria, 3. Patea: Enteric fever, 1. Wanganui: Diphtheria, 2. Palmerston North : Diphtheria, 11; pneumonia, 1. Wellington: Scarlet fever, 2; diphtheria, 9; tuberculosis, 4; pneumonic influenza, 1 Nelson: Diphtheria. 2.
