0 WANGANUI ACCEPTANCES NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.’’) The Wanganui winter meeting will be held on Thursday and Saturday, and the Oaniaru meeting on Friday and Saturday. Backers may find Hawera form very unreliable at Wanganui. En Route made a favourable impression at Wanganui yesterday in a schooling lesson. He is to contest the Century Hurdles at Wanganui. He ran second in this race last year. En Route, Spoony, Dick, and Eonmark are the only Trentham entries for Auckland. Local horses figure well in the Otaki list of nominations. R. O ‘Donnell left for Wanganui yesterday. Ares met with a slight mis-

hap, and was not taken. C. Coleman has Oakleigh, Peter Amans, and Royal Fame at Wanganui Zaragoza is due from Auckland on her way south, but Mustard Pot is still unable to travel.

San Forte ran a couple of good races at Hawera, and should run wdl at ■Wanganui.

Mr. J. Bull’s horses, Ngata, Omahu, Brigadier Bill, and Ruby Ring have arrived at Wanganui to fulfil engagements at the meeting. Lark Hall was lame after competing in the steeplechase the second day at Hawera.

On Civility’s recent showings she goes better on top of the ground than when the going is heavy. Starland, who is regarded as a certain starter in the Wanganui Steeplechase, is reported sore after racing nt Hawera last week. Starland was going remarkably well when he met disaster at the post and rails jump in the Opcke Steeplechase on Thursday, and, as on the opening day, when ho fell at the sod bank, he fell very clumsily, and evidently is inclined to “chance” fences, a dangerous precedent when such are solid like those which he struck at Hawera. The nominations for tjlie Otaki winter meeting are very satisfactory, 4iid at present there is every indicate n that the club will have a successful meeting. The general entries for Ellerslie this year are very atti active.

It is stated that Uncle Ned is being tried over the hurdles at Avondale. A few seasons ago Uncle Ned was a good performer on the flat, but he is ten years old now, and having shown no form for some ’time is wel ! past his best.

Spoony will be ridden at Wanganui by A. Becd. 11. Reed will ride Sunart and Mireusonta in their engagements and C. Reed will ride the Kemball horses when the weights suit Last year at Wanganui C. Reed rode Rouen who won the chief flat handicap each day.

Mr. N. Blackmorp, a steward of the Manawatu Racing Club, and Mrs. Blackmore, who races Para, will leave by the Maunganui for Sydney on a tour of the East. Their many friends will wish them a safe journey and a pleasant holiday.

Rapine is due in Wellington this morning by the Marama, and J. Cameron with The Hawk and other members of his team is also expected. According to R. Reed, Rapine’s leg may take some time to get right. The death occurred in Melbourne last week of Mr. James Hathaway, who was prominently connected with the sport, and some time ago took some horses oveh to Australia. He was an unde of the well-known horsemen, A., R., and C. Reed. Glenross failed at Ellerslie under welter weights, but he was new to right-hande’d going, and also met big fields. He is a good horse, and may run prominently at Wanganui this week.

Sir Rosebery jumped somewhat erratically in his races at Eginont (says a Taranaki exchange), but it may have been that his rider was inclined to hang on to the gelding’s head unduly. At fences where Sir Rosebery was given more latitude he jumped in a proficient manner, and should do his connections pood service this season, if racvd continuously over the “big” jumps.

Knighthood (Watson) and Jolie Princess (Nixon) was 'Schooled, over hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, the former giving a good exhibition. Jolie Princess fell at the last obstacle, . but fortunately neither the mare nor her rider suffered injury. Archie (Rutherford) and To Talii (W. Rowe) schooled satisfactorily over a few hurdles. Never Despair (W. Rowe) gave a good exhibition over the fences on the flat, including the double and water jump. “There is a story attached to Simper and how she was acquired by the late Air. Rupert Morrison from Air. J. 13. Reid (says “Sentinel” in the “Otago Daily Times”). Mr. Morrison was one of a small party paying a visit to the Elderslie Stud, and he took a great fancy to the mare. Mr. Reid, however, was by no means anxious to sell, and finally put what ho thought would be a forbidding price on the mare. Mr. Morrison promptly drew a cheque for the 2000 guineas asked, and the mare joined his stud.” Sifnper was foaled in 1912, and her .contributions to the New Zealand Stud Book are Affectation, Illume, Gold Light, Razzie Dazzle, Dazzling Light, a colt by Boniform, and a colt by Paper Money.

J. T. Jamieson was acting on behalf of several Auckland sportsmen when he was buying at the Sydney sales, the Trillion—Pretty Nell gelding and the Magpie—Kiki colt being for Mr. C. G. Mclndoe, the Liliacre—Aureity colt, the Comedy King—-Berylioum colt, and the filly by The Nut—Nauta being for Mr. J. C. Gleeson while the Demosthenes—Dragon Queen colt is for Mr. F. Earl The other lots were purchased by the well-known trainer on his own behalf. Jamieson will train at Te Awamutu, where he has arranged to take over ten boxes from the Waipa Racing Club.

Bort Rae had a lucky escape from serious injury at Ellerslie on Thursday morning (says the “Star”). He was riding Tressor, accompanied by Opalbid (Cotter), over the fences on the flat. Tressor fell at the second fence of the double, and Opaloid came over him. Rae was able to walk away after a little time, but was considerably shaken as the result of the accident.

It is expected that the steeplechaser Noble will require a spell of about a couple of years before it will be wise to try him out again. It is also possible that ho will never stand another preparation.

Very satisfactory nominations have boon received for the South Wairarnpa Trotting Club’s annual meeting, to he held on the Tarntahi racecourse on June 3. They include horses from both islands. W. Rennie, who was absent from the saddle for some time, is now a regular attendee at Te Rapa track (says a Waikato exchange). Although Rapine won tho three longdistance weigh t-for-ago races and credited his sporting owner Mr. A. B.

Williams with £4820, nobody begrudged Mr. Williams the success of his horse in the slightest degree (says “Cardigan” in the “Referee”). Ho was the best, and that is enough. There is no doubt Rapine is a great stayer and n very much better horse than when here in the spring. He is not a big horse, but for a gelding shows excellent quality and a fine barrel. In fact, I heard a good judge the other day say that for a gelding he has the best middle piece ho has ever seen.

Reed’s masterly riding of Rapine was one of the features of the Randwick meeting (says the Melbourne “Globe”). He proved himself an adept under any set of circumstances. On the first day of the meeting he held Rapine behind the field, and smothered them with an overpowering rush in the last half furlong. Then on the concluding day he took his mount to the front a mile from home, and rode a beautiful waiting race in front. Of course, he was on a horse that is amenable to his rider’s desires. Rapine was running along just behind the leaders in the early stages of the race, and though the pace was slow, ha was not “pulling an ounce.” Nevertheless. Reed is deserving of high praise for his riding. A Sydney exchange recently received has the following:—A Sydney man who takes great interest in sport returned the other day from a holiday tour in New Zealand. He was naturally attracted to the Trentham course at Wei lington. and although he admits that in some ways the accommodation is superior to that in Australia, to use his own words: “I have experienced more excitement at a school picnic. I happened to be at the back of the tottalisator building conversing with a friend from this side, and he remarked: ‘Let’s go and see the race.’ When he moved towards the grandstand we found that the race was over. There was not the slightest indication, such ns we are accustomed to here, that the race was being run.” Fifteen yearlings landed in Auckland last week from Sydney, and “Phaeton” says: They created a most favourable impression. There was not a single one of the collection that had a weedy appearance, and, if looks and breeding are any criterion, it can be said quite unreservedly that there is strong evidence that the Aucklanders who operated at the ringside at _ Randwick last month displayed good judgment. In a hurried glance at the youngsters as they were landed on the wharf from the Alaheno one of the first of the collection to which I paid homage was a fine upstanding bar colt bv Comedy King from the Bcrrill mare Berylium, owned by Mr. J. C. Gleeson, and standing close by was a sturdy bay colt by I.inacro from the Grafton mare Aurietv. who is also the property ot Air. Gleeson. The popular Auckland sportsman has certainly good reason to rejoice over the Australian purchases A chestnut colt by Demosthenes from Dragon Queen (daughter of The Wag) is another attractive youngster with a strong pedigree, and his growth will bo watched with keen interest. A colt by Westcourt from the Kenilworth marc Wolaroi Lass carries quite a dashing appearance. This youngster boasts a broad blazed face, which will always make his identification a matter of ease. The Maheno had a good passage from Sydney, and the youngsters were landed in capital condition. WANGANUI TRACK WORK By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, May 12. The weather was line this morning for training operations, but the track was heavy after overnight rain. Comical and Diamond Ring ran half a mile in 52sec. Attractive and Crucelle covered five furlongs in Imin. 5 l-ssec. Tenterfield and Vagabond did the last seven furlongs of a couple of rounds in lmiti. oflsec. En Route gave an excellent display of hurdling in a couple of rounds by himself Prince Rufus, by himself, did not •shape too well over the hurdles. Omahu and Brigadier Bill were associated over a couple of rounds of the hurdles. Omahu shaping better than his companion. Musical, Trespass, and Bumptious finished in that order at the end of seven furlongs, run in Imin. 34sec. Roval Fame and Peter Amans gave a moderate display over the hurdles. Civility gave Gome Red a good break over half a mile, finishing well in front in lOsei. Oakleigh was given a couple of rounds over the big fences, jumping well. WANGANUI ACCEPTANCES
