DOMINION’S NAVAL FUTURE
EXPENDITURE WILL SOON BE A MILLION A YEAR POSSIBILITY OF ACQUIRING A THIRD CRUISER By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, May 11. The Right Hon. W. F. Massey, referring to Dominion naval defence in an interview, said that within a year or two New Zealand’s expenditure in that direction would necessarily be a million a year. That would be the position even if the question of fortified base in the Pacific were abandoned. because in lieu_of our contribution toward the Singapore project it would be necessary to obtain another cruiser for the Dominion’s division of the navy. The time must come when New Zealand would have three cruisers, but it was not yet. There was no doubt, concluded Mr. Massey, that we must consider the development of our part in naval defence.
