DOMINION’S POPULATION EXTERNAL MIGRATION LAST YEAR The population of New Zealand is slowly but surely increasing. The annual report on external migration shows that, including crews of vessels, 83,827 persons arrived in New Zealand from overseas during the year 1923, an increase as compared with 1922 of 7095. During the same period 76,451 .persons departed, as compared with 69,346 in 1922, an increase of 7105. The gain in population by migration during the P er ‘°d w . as 7376, as compared with 7386 in 192... MMo immigrants outnumbered female immigrants by 48,187 in 1923 and 42,498 in 1922, but a male excess among the departures of 47,60 7 in 1923 and 42,474 in 1922 shows a gain in male population of 3953 in 1923 and 3705 in 1922. . . The largo preponderance of male immigrants and emigrants is accounted for almost entirely by the fact that the figures include crews of vessels. The statistics for the twelve months ended December 31, 1923, show that during that period 36,488 persons, excluding members of crews of vessels, arrived in the Dominion. Of these, only 11,762 were immigrants intending permanent residence in the country, as compared with 13,845 of a similar class in 1922. The remainder of the immigrants, 24,726 in number as compared with 21,388 in 1922. were classified as shown below. Corresponding figures for 1922 are also given:
