A MEAN THEFT

Robbery from one who had befriended him brought about the appearance before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday of a young canvasser named Charles Hector Daniels. Chief-Detective Kemp said that the charge related to the theft of a camera, valued at £6, tho property of a lady ivith whom accused and his wife had been lodging for the past four months. The article was removed from a bedroom during the owner’s absence, and when disposed of realised 10s. “The theft was a particularly mean one,” added tho chief detective, “as accused and his wife had been lodging free of charge with complainant since the beginning of the year.” Mr. W. E. Leicester said that ae cused was up against it financially, but intended to redeem the camera and return it to its rightful owner. The Magistrate remanded accused until this morning, pending the arrival of a report from the probation oflicci.
