U.S. VICE-PRESIDENCY
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE
A “DRY” ADVOCATE PROHIBITION MAY BE MAJOR ISSUE (Rec. April 28, 7.25 p.m.) Washington, April 27. Great interest and surprise have been aroused by Representative Upshaw’s announcement that he will be a candidate for nomination for the Vice-Presidency at the Democratic Party National Convention on June 24. Mr. Upshaw, who is the strongest advocate of prohibition in Congress and possibly throughout the United States, will have the support univ-ers-ally of prohibitionists, irrespectiva of party, and friends aver that he can capture the nomination regardless of who is nominated for the Presidency. Governor Smith, of New York, who will be the leading aspirant for the Democratic Presidential nomination, is an avowed wit, and Mr, Upshaw’n announcement indicates a stormy session at the national convention, anil the possibility that the coming election campaign will bo fought with prohibition as the major issue. This.would possibly be welcomed by certain elements of both parties who fear tho
consequences of tflie oil scandal issue. Both parties so far, however, have shunned the prohibition issue, declaring that it is a. law which must be enforced. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
