In the first life in the lady associates, Mrs. Smith played Mrs. McDowell, and the former exponent gave the finest exhibition of croquet yet played in the tournament. She got perfect position for running the hoops, and her long shots were unique in their regularity; all through the game her play was of a very high standard. In the second life Mrs. Smith met Mrs. Gardner, and a strenuous game ensued, lasting over three hours, each player striving for mastery. Eventually Mrs. Gardner won, the score being 2d—24, Mrs. Smith having won the first life and Mrs. Gardner the second ; these players played the first game of the final rubber, and Mrs. Smith won.
